Powerboat Courses
Powerboats are great fun; you can go for a jolly around your local stretch of water or venture further afield across the channel at quite a speed. Despite not legally needing any qualifications to operate a powerboats in the UK we strongly recommend, in order to get the most out of your boat, you go through the RYA powerboat courses before operating a powerboat by yourself. This course is open to people aged 8 and up wards. It is a great one day introduction to powerboats and the basics of launching and recovering a powerboat and general boat handling. No previous experience is required for the Powerboat Level 1 course and after attending the course you should be able to drive a powerboat under supervision. Powerboat Level 1 Courses start from around £130 per person depending on where you would like to take the course, and can be taken on either an individual or group basis. This two day courses is designed to provide you with the skills you needs to drive a powerboat, including close quarter and high speed manoeuvring, man overboard procedures and collision regulations. Participants must be over the age of 12. This certificate also qualifies you for your International Certificate or Competence (ICC) for boats up to 10 meters. Powerboat Level 2 courses start from around £250 depending on where you would like to take the course. This two day course expands on the knowledge and skills learnt in the level 2 course, taking a more in-depth look into pilotage, navigation, engine checks, coming alongside in different conditions and the effects of waves and rougher weather conditions. Participants must be over the age of 16. Intermediate Powerboat courses start from around £270 depending on where you would like to take the course. We would recommend you also take your VHF and First Aid course at this stage. This course is again two days long but is only open to those over the age of 17. Before taking this course you are required to have a certain level of pre course experience, this includes knowledge of chart work and navigation up to the standard of Day Skipper and Intermediate Powerboat or equivalent experience. You must also hold a First Aid and VHF certificate. Advance Powerboat courses start from around £280 up to £360 depending on where you would like to do the course. This two day course equips you with the knowledge and skills to act as race safety boat, escort boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghy’s. You will cover skills such as boat handling, dinghy, wind surf and Kayak or canoe rescue, towing, end of race day procedures, communication, local factors and suitability of crafts. The course is open to those over the age of 16, with Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent experience and costs around £250 to £300 depending on where you would like to take the course.Have fun on the water whilst learn how to safely operate a powerboat.
